Zoom in before Zooming out

Do you ever just scroll through Instagram or Facebook and get so upset with yourself because your house doesn’t look like that? Or because “they” have the perfect flat lay of baby toys and clothes, while you are struggling to keep anything clean and nothing you have matches.

What about when you see those pictures of the perfect quiet time… A bible and a coffee, laptop probably, the latest book that’s a must read and of course the perfect clean background, either a clean work space or even better a clean bed with white sheets…

But let me tell you a secret… shhh you’re not allowed to tell anybody… these photos are just a zoomed in focussed picture of something somebody has set up…. There is a reason they have zoomed in and that’s because if you zoomed out of that picture this is what you would probably see… you would see messy tables, messy floors, messy kids and a mama who is a complete hot mess! And who really wants to see that in a photo?

I am guilty of the perfect quiet time picture… I take them regularly to post them to inspire and encourage people to get into the Word…but if I could zoom out a bit let me tell you what you would find… Let me use an example…

20841773_1944864682396574_2655375977563212635_n

This might look like the perfect quiet time but when you zoom out…

Zoom out and you will see a messy table that is crying out in neglect. With piles and piles of homework, junk, and pieces of paper that look important but who really knows, or remembers.

Zoom out and you will see clean washing needing to be put away, not just some washing but what I like to call Mt. Washmore, a mountain that even the most daring of mountain climbers would hesitate to climb.

Zoom out and you will see kids watching Sesame Street, for the 100th time this week just to get some peace and quiet. Yes, I use the TV as a babysitter sometimes.

Zoom out you will see a house with a chore list not getting any smaller. In fact the longer I sit here I can physically see the list getting longer and longer.

But what if, for just 5 minutes I choose to zoom in. I choose to not look around at my circumstances or busyness, but I choose to stop – Selah – and breathe and Zoom in, this is what you would find.
Zoom in and you will see that I took 5 mins to catch my breath. A much needed breath like the one taken while swimming, between diving under the waves again.
Zoom in and you will see the moment that I listened to God and what He had for me in that breath. Hearing what God says about me and my purpose as a Mum and as His daughter.

Zoom in and I could realign myself with His Spirit and check myself and my attitudes. Those selfish thoughts, those poor me moments, and those horrible slip ups of anger filled responses to the kids and husband, and ask for forgiveness so I can move on and walk in freedom.
Zoom in and I got to prepare myself for the afternoon onslaught of homework, hungry children, bath and bed routine… cause you all know that we need every bit of God in those evening routines!!! Can I get an Amen??!?
So I chose to Zoom in for 5 minutes and it changed my day!! – It really did!! And sometimes when all is calm in the Moala Tribe and I get to take more than 5 minutes it is pure Luxury!!

I just want to encourage you today… take 5 minutes if that’s all you can and chose to Zoom in… Choose to take time to zoom into what God says about you, what He can help you with. Let Him give you the strength to get through the next few hours. Take that well needed and deserved breath before the next set of waves come pounding in.

Then, when you have to, zoom out and tackle each little task as you always do but with God whispering to you and cheering you on. So remember when you see those perfect Instagram photos to be encouraged and inspired but don’t lose the sense of reality.

Choose to Zoom in before Zooming out!

When we let our children down…

I woke up after only having around 4 hours of sleep, I did not feel like I had even gone to bed the night before. It was a rough night with sick children and a baby who still wakes regularly for feeds, and my hubby was traveling for meetings around the Pacific. I was not a happy mummy at all!! I was not a grumpy mummy. I was not a person I recognised at all. I felt like a robot, an emotionless, mechanical thing, just going through the motions as quickly as I could to get my two older girls off to school. I know they talked to me, I’m not sure what my response was but I do know that I was in no way my usual self.

After they had left for school and I was left with baby and myself, I kinda shook myself awake and was completely ashamed and devastated that I had let my children down again. Me. The Mum. The one who was meant to protect them and keep them safe and be their safe place, I had been completely distant and unfeeling towards them. I almost got into the car to go to the school and pick them up and bring them home for the day to try and fix the morning.

But I knew what I needed. I needed God. I needed time by myself with my Rock and rest. I couldn’t fix this by myself. This was not a matter of the amount of sleep I did or didn’t get, this was a matter of the heart and I needed to align it back to God and His heart for my children and for me.

So what do we do? What should we do when we let our kids down? When for whatever reason we are not the parents we want to be? What should we do when we forget who we are and whose we are?

Its not easy to admit that we haven’t got it all together. Its not easy when you come to the realisation that you are not that mum that you thought you would be.

RUN TO GOD
There is only one thing we can do when we get to this point, and that is to run into the arms of the perfect and good Father God. Go to Him and cry it out, yell it out, get it all out to a God who is waiting for you to turn back to Him.

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
We have to acknowledge that we have not been the best stewards of what He has given us, our precious children. We have to ask for forgiveness from Him for this, then let His forgiveness and Grace come pouring over you. Then walk out this forgiveness and freedom that you have in Him.

SAY SORRY
I am a firm believer in saying sorry to your children as well. Let them know that you realise that you were not behaving in the right way and that you love them and are sorry for not reacting in the best way. This also teaches them how to say Sorry and that if mum says sorry then even they can say sorry for things that they do. It also shows them that you are validating their feelings and telling them that they matter as a person.

QUALITY TIME
Then do something fun! Lighten the mood and change the atmosphere by doing something fun with them. Have a change of scene and go somewhere like a park, the beach or just for a walk. Or put some music on and have a dance party. Play a board game or game of cards, do some craft together. Whatever it is, reconnect with your children on their level and spend some quality time with them, show them you value them.

WORK ON IT WITH GOD
The hardest part and one that, for me anyway, is the scariest, is having to keep myself in check so it doesn’t happen again. I am working with God on lots of little things in my life and one of them is my short temper and yelling at my children. So I am reading Bible verses about anger, I have specific prayers for myself and I am accountable to my husband and some close friends for this. So I encourage you whatever it is that you think you have failed in, go to God about it, get some truth from His Word, pray it over yourself, declare what He says about it. Then find some good wise counsel who can keep you accountable in that particular area.

GRACE
I am not Naive and think that this is going to be fixed after one mistake, although that would be amazing if it could!! But its ok if you keep making mistakes, just take on His Grace for you and Give yourself some Grace. Don’t expect to be changed quickly but celebrate each step in the right direction, growth, even little growth is better than giving up.

Here are some verses that I have found helpful for me when I have made mistakes and in aligning my heart with His again.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – 1 John 1:9

Keep steady my steps according to your promise,
and let no iniquity get dominion over me. – Psalm 119:133

Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, – Acts 3:19 -20

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. – 2 Corinthians 5:17

He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot.
You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. – Micah 7:18-19

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. – John 8:36

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. – 1 Corinthians 15:57

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. – Romans 8:37

Whispers from God for the Tired Mum

7 Verses that bring rest, breathe life and heal a weary, exhausted Mama’s heart.

Being a mum is an amazing experience!! We get to form little minds and slowly guide them and point them to a Heavenly Father who loves them and created them for a good purpose. There is also no denying that being a mum is hard work!! With the monotonous daily errands like washing, cleaning, washing, feeding, washing, tidying and did I say washing? It is also an emotional job. We train them in character, in relationships and all their big emotions.

It is draining, and it’s really easy for us to get exhausted not only physically and emotionally but also spiritually. If we are not being fed spiritually and not getting our time with God daily, we are making life harder for ourselves than it has to be. God has so much to say in His Word to us as tired and worn out Mums. He has given us this beautiful challenge of mothering our treasures, and He will give us all that we need to do it well.

God loves us so much and He completely understands our exhaustion and He encourages us to rest. Isn’t that amazing!!! He wants us to rest, and more than that he calls us to rest. He invites us and begs us to rest. Just as I am writing this I am feeling that beckoning to rest right now. It’s more than just a sleep, more than a strong coffee, more than a holiday even. His rest that He wants to give you is life giving, and a refreshing, strengthening and forever kind of rest!! Thats the kind of rest that I want please!!

I want to share a few of these whispers to you!! I hope you hear them and meditate on them and let the Word soak into every part of your exhausted self!!

Isaiah 4011

“He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm and carry them to His bosom, and gently lead those who are with young”.

Isaiah 40:11

This is my favourite verse when it comes to being a Mum. It is such a beautiful picture of God watching over us. He leads us gently and holds us through it all. He holds us so close to himself that we can hear His heartbeat if we lean in to Him.

Matthew112830

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

This one is such a breath of fresh air for me whenever I read it. God is calling us to come to Him when we are tired and weary and that He will give us rest. He is our rest. We can give our burdens to Him and He will exchange it for His rest!! I don’t know about you but to me that sounds like a pretty good deal.

Song of Solomon 21013

“Arise my darling, come away, my beautiful one. For now the winter is past, the rain has ended and gone away. The blossoms appear in the country side. The time of singing has come, and the turtledove’s cooing is heard in our land. The fig tree ripens its figs; the blossoming vines give off their fragrance. Arise my darling, my beautiful one.”

Song of Solomon 2:10-13

The whole of this chapter is a beautiful love song. I love the way it can symbolise God’s love for us as well. It talks about the time of winter is past, and going into a new season of Joy. So even when you feel like the season you are in as a tired mum is going to last forever, it won’t! There is a light at the end of the tunnel (as they say). He is again calling us away to a time of intimacy and rest with Him.

Psalm2312

“ The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life; He leads me along the right paths for his namesake.”

Psalm 23:1-2

Again we have a beautiful passage showing God’s care for us and that He provides us with all we need. This includes rest and strength for each day. He is the one who leads and guides us. He takes us to a place of rest, renewal, and restoration. Don’t let the fame of this verse take anything away from the truth that it speaks to us!

Phillipians467

“Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Phillipians 4:6-7

We have no need to be worried, anxious, or stressed out because we have an amazing God who asks us to take it to Him in prayer and He will give us all peace!! Peace that we cant even understand. Peace that is rooted in His love and sovereignty over all. Even more than that, He will guard our hearts and minds from other anxious and worried thoughts as we continue to go to Him in prayer.

Zephanaiah 317

“The Lord your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will be quiet in his love, He will delight in you with singing”

Zephaniah 3:17

He quiets you with His love and rejoices over you with singing. Can you just let that wash over you for a moment. Just close your eyes and imagine that again. He will quiet you with His Love and rejoices over you with singing!! He absolutely looks at you and smiles. This alone just gives me rest, to know that I don’t have to do anything, He just is delighted in me. We can stop striving and rest in his love and live our life knowing that Our Heavenly Father is delighted in us!

Isaiah4031

“But those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not become weary, they will walk and not faint.”

Isaiah 40:31

I could not write up a list of verses for the weary and tired mum without including this one. It is such an amazing promise from an amazing God who does not want us to try and do it all on our own!! He will renew our strength, He will give us all we need for every moment of everyday and all we have to do is trust in Him. It’s just that simple.

So there you have it my 7 go to verses for a tired exhausted Mum. Write them out. Print them out. Paint them in the sky. Whatever you need to do to get these truths deep down into your heart.

Let me know if you have any other verses that you go to for your strength. I’d love to read them!!

Keeping Spiritually Fed as a Busy Mum

It is a typical Sunday morning. The kids have woken up super early and are watching some cartoons while we wake up slowly over a cup of coffee. We enjoy breakfast as a family and then I look up at the clock and realise “WE NEED TO GET READY FOR CHURCH” and the mad hour begins! Showering, dressing, doing little girls hair and getting baby fed and ready to go. Somehow we make it to church in time, with smiles on our faces though they may be a little strained. (You know what I’m talking about). Once we get to church usually the worship time is ok and the kids dance around like adorable little ballerinas and all is great. Then the sermon starts…

Now some of you may be super blessed with a church that has a Sunday school running at the same time as the service, or even a childcare in the church. However, our church does not have these all the time. During the sermon time usually baby will start crying, or one or both girls need to go to the bathroom, or something happens which makes me miss out on some or all of the message time of the service.

I know sometimes its easy to just forget it and try again next Sunday but I really strongly believe that its important for us Mummas to get fed spiritually so that we can not only have the strength to face each day, but also so that we have something to give out to our children and husbands. We cannot give from an empty tank!

It can be really easy to become dry and stuck in life when we are not getting the Word of God into our lives.

“I am the Bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”

John 6:35

When we come to Jesus, we will not hunger and thirst, which means we will be completely satisfied. Satisfied in life, satisfied in our relationships, and satisfied in our Motherhood. We won’t feel dry, or empty, or weak, or incapable to keep going. I want that!! I want to be completely satisfied in Him and in my life!! Filled up and overflowing so that I can give out! So I can give of myself, so I can be a good witness to my children, my husband, family and people around me.

So how do I keep myself spiritually fed when missing out on the some or all of the service each Sunday? Here are a few of the ways…

Podcasts

This is my favourite go to at the moment. I listen to podcasts when I’m folding laundry, going for a walk, cooking dinner, and sometimes just doing the daily school pick ups. There are some awesome podcasts out there with sermons by nearly every preacher you can think of. A few of my favourite Christian Mum podcasts are these : The God Centred Mom, Mom Struggling Well, She Proves Faithful, and At Home.

Devotionals

There are some beautiful devotionals available out there right now. Even if you only get 5 minutes to read them, you will get God’s Word and some great teaching that’s creative and encouraging.
I recommend: She Reads Truth, The Daily Grace Co, and Illustrated Faith.

Phone Apps

Sometimes its hard to get much time to read the Bible so I love to have it on my phone. When I’m feeding baby, or putting him to sleep, or even if I’m in a waiting room somewhere, no need for candy crush, here are some great apps that have the Bible on them or little 2 minute devotions you can read quickly: Holy Bible, First 5, She Reads Truth, Thrive Moms and Pray Today.

Worship Music

Just having it playing in the background can set such an amazing atmosphere in your home. Also you can sing and have your own worship time while you are doing anything around the house and get some deep truths into your heart through Worship. My favourite Worship at the moment is : Kari Jobe, Bethel, Josh Garrels, Sandra McCracken, Hillsong and Chris Tomlin.

Read Read Read

Reading is an obvious but mostly overlooked way for us to seek out teaching. I have recently just started reading again, I used to claim that I was too busy to read and never had time. Then I looked at my reality and I was scrolling on my phone sometimes for up to an hour before bed. I have now given myself a rule, once I am in bed at the beginning of the night No Phone! So now I have heaps of time to read before bed. My Reading list is growing everyday as I discover new authors and new books I cant wait to get my hands on.

I think the most important thing to remember is to make it a priority to spend time with God. For myself I have had to catch myself mindlessly scrolling instagram or pinterest before thinking “hmmm is this the best way I can be spending my time right now??” Now I’m not saying instagram or pinterest is wrong at all, I love social media and it does give me a break every now and then when i need it. But it doesn’t bring me life like getting into the Word or being in His presence. So totally NO GUILT!!! Give yourself grace, especially when you are in the stages with newborns or teething babies who are not sleeping well. Do what you need to to survive. Just be encouraged that spending time with the Lord however you can will help you in ways that I can’t even describe!!!

Have you got any other ideas of how to get extra teaching as a busy mum? How do you keep your self spiritually fed as a busy mum?

5 Ways to involve your children in your time with God.

My times with God are so precious to me. I crave that alone time with God everyday. I try to have my times alone with God every morning before the kids wake up which you can read about here. Sometimes this doesn’t happen because of different reasons, so rather than neglect my time with Him for that day and try to take on the day in my own  strength, I have to find another time during the day to spend time with Jesus. Usually this means my kids are around, sometimes I get them busy doing something so I can have focussed alone time with God but sometimes it doesn’t matter how exciting the activity is that I set up for them, they only want to be with Mummy. Plus I love that if they are involved with me in time with God I am training them in the ways they should go, as well as having quality time with my children.

involve children 6So I have some ideas here of how to involve your children of any age into your times with God. These are activities that I have done with my own children (7 and 4 yrs old) they were successful and everyone had fun. So here are 5 ways you can include your children in your time with God.

involving kids 1

1.Read your Bible to your children out loud and then ask them questions. You can read whatever scriptures you are up to in your reading plan, children can understand way more than we give them credit for. I have found when reading to them from my Bible that they ask some great questions, and also begin to see how stories in the Bible fit together. For example, I have read them a Psalm and then explained that this was written after Nathan had come to David, and they were so interested and asking questions, which lead to reading the story of David and Nathan.

” So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.  Isaiah 55:11

Which basically means that when we read the Bible it is never going to be a waste of time. Read it and ask them questions and it will be an awesome Bible study for you, I bet you learn something new!!

involving kids 42. Drawing what they hear. Give them paper and colouring pencils and other fun creative tools and get them to create a picture from either what you have read or read while they draw. You can do a family picture and write a corresponding verse and put it up for the week to memorise it.

3. Put on Worship music and have a Praise Party right there in your living room! This one is so much fun, just put on some of your favourite worship and praise music and worship God with your kids!! You can dance, sing, whatever you like, teach them the true meaning of worship and I bet you will be taught a little but about being free in worship!!

involve children 7

4. Creative Journaling – Painting and Colouring in the Bible. If you like doing Bible journaling and painting and drawing in your Bible, your children can definitely join in there. You can either give them a blank piece of paper to draw on, or make a copy of a Bible page that they can paint on just like you. Or you could let them do it in your Bible, and really enjoy the moment and remember its about the time spent with God not the outcome of the artwork.

5. Pray for the World – Find a world globe like this one or an Atlas and pick a country to pray over with your children. You can get information on the country either just looking it up, or try the Pray Today app, or even the Operation World book.Pray for the children in these countries, or pray for the churches there. My children really love this one, they really love learning about different countries and cultures. This is also a great activity because you can start to teach Biblical worldview and differences in cultures and beliefs to your children.

involving kids 2

There you have it, my 5 ways of including and involving your children in your times with the Lord. Remember that you are your children’s first view of God and that your children are your mission field. So what an awesome way of introducing them to Jesus and the reality of having a relationship with Him!

This is by no means an exhaustive list, these are just a few I have come up with. I would love to hear if you have any other ideas, or ways you have involved your children in your time with the Lord.

Our Kids = Our Mission

I often hear Mums say that they don’t have time for missions, or they say that missions is not for them at this time, maybe when their children are grown up and they can leave them at home with family, or old enough to even join them “on the field”. Sometimes they say things like,”I wish I could give more than just my money or prayers. I really crave to give more in ministry or missions”

Now disclaimer here – yes I work with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) an international Missions organisation. Yes I live in a different country than my or my husbands family. Yes I have brought my children up on the “ Mission Field”. I have taken them to many ministry events and outreaches to different countries and communities. This has not been easy and many more times than I would like to count I have thought about how much easier it would be bringing up our children with our families around, but that is not what we as a family have been called to do. This is the life that God has asked the Moala family to have for this time. However this is something different to what I want to talk about today.

What I want to share with you is that every believing Mum or Mom (I realise I have Mamas reading from both hemispheres) has a responsibility in the Mission field!!

Now before you close the browser window thinking I am telling you to go into international missions or be like Abraham, I am not saying that at all. In fact, hopefully, the title of this blog caught your attention anyway. What I am saying is that every Mother in every family has a very unique and special job from God! Your children are your Mission Field!! So you don’t even need to leave your house and you have your own ministry and mission right there in your living room, kitchen, bedrooms and backyard!!

OurKidsOurMission1
One way is to let them see you in the Word! – Having regular “quiet times”

Matthew 28:19-20 says “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

So what does this mean for us Mums? We are to bring up our children and disciple them, teaching them the Word of God and God is with us to help us in this monumental task!

Psalm 78: 4-7 says “We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; that the generation to come might know them, the children who would be born, that they may arise and declare them to their children, that they may set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God but keep His commandments.”

OurKidsOurMission3
Sharing stories of what God did for them today – they are drawing pictures to show us what God did today for them personally to share at dinner.

Again a beautiful passage of the benefits of sharing what God has done, to our children. Sometimes we make the mistake of not sharing the ups and downs of life with our children because we feel they may not be able to handle it. I know from experience that my kids are very resilient, and when I share our struggles with them, whether it is financial, health or work (without giving gory details) they are quick to pray and look to God. When I share with them answered prayer it really boosts their already childlike faith!! Your stories may be the ones they remember of Gods faithfulness. That may be the one thing that they understand and gives them a deeper knowledge of God which brings stability and strength to their faith and relationship with Him. If all we do is share Bible stories with them and pray over our food, how does this give them anything to stand on when life gets hard? Or when they grow up a bit and begin to question God and their faith? Be real with your kids. Speak the truth to them of how God has come through for you personally and as a family.

OurKidsOurMission2
Sharing from the Word together as a family – They always love it when I read from an adult Bible.

We often talk about Missionaries reaching the unreached. Going into the unreached people groups and sharing God with people who have never heard the name of Jesus before. But let me tell you a secret…. your children are your unreached people!!! God gave them to you and you get to be the first person to tell them about Jesus!! Tell them about Jesus and His great love for them, before the world tells them something different. Your children are your unreached people group! Right there in front of you!! I pray that as a Mum on the mission field I don’t get so caught up with reaching the lost around me that I forget the unreached people right in front of me! As a Mum, my children are the people that God has given to me to teach, train, disciple and point to God. As a missionary the people around me in my community and the people we are ministering to are important too, but not more important than my children.

I hope this has encouraged you to see your purpose in motherhood and the amazing ministry that you have in front of you. Maybe later you will get to go an a mission trip, and maybe in another season you will have more to give of yourself in ministry but right now what you are doing with your children is the most important ministry you can have.

So just as in Matthew 19:13-15 When Jesus called the children unto himself and prayed for them, I encourage you to take your children to Jesus. Point them to Him everyday. Share your stories with them of Gods faithfulness and greatness. Pray with them over the big things as well as the little things. Tell them the Bible stories and explain how these stories relate to them today. Tell them other peoples stories of what God has done for others too. Don’t forget that as you disciple, train and teach your children that God will be with you every step of the way!!

Your Kids are Your Mission Field – Be encouraged in the purpose of your Motherhood!!

Creating a meaningful morning routine from a sleep deprived Mama!

Firstly I want to tell you that this is something that I am still developing.. something that I haven’t perfected but I am still working out what works for me.

Secondly I want to say that my babies have never been good sleepers… my two older girls only started sleeping from 2 1/2 years old and I now have a 7 month old baby boy who is following in his sisters footsteps and not sleeping great…

So why do I think it’s important for me to have a decent morning routine?? Let me tell you..

  1. I think it’s important for me to be awake and functioning to some capacity when my kids wake up. I don’t know about you but if I get woken up by one of my kids and I’m not ready, I can be quite a grumpy morning monster… I can be snappy and not react well to them at all. However if I’m already awake, and have had some “me” time before they wake up, I actually can be a really pleasant mum, who is happy to see them and ready to take on the day with them.
  2. I think the way that I spend the first 15-20 minutes of my day really sets the tone for my whole day. If I have been woken up and then had to rush around getting kids breakfast, dressed and out the door for school, and am still not quite awake, my whole day feels rushed and disorganised. It feels like I can never get on top of anything, and I usually get upset or cranky about the littlest things. However if I have had time with God, over coffee, looked over my planner for the day, and maybe (If I’m lucky and they are still asleep) a little 10 mins exercise, I am ready for the day. My whole day feels like its happening for a purpose, I am generally way more joyful and settled.

Mission Mumma Bible Time

Ok so let me tell you how I set up my mornings… (I would like to just say that I have completely adapted this idea from Hello Mornings, and Kat Lee’s 3 minute mornings, and her philosophy/mantra of having a purposeful and life giving morning that has 3 parts to it – God, Plan, Move)

So the night before I usually set the timer on my coffee machine, have all my God time needs (Bible, pens, prayer journal, notebook…) and my planner all ready to go, so that in the morning I don’t have to make my coffee, or look for my books, everything is waiting for me. I have a nice space set up in the corner of our loungeroom with a lamp and table and big chair. It’s so warm and welcoming for me in the morning.

Mission Mumma Quiet time

I have my alarm set for 6am, although I am currently finding it is not quite enough time, so I’m thinking of possibly setting it a little earlier but let me just say this is completely with grace… My 7 month old does not sleep well, so if we have had a bad night and I have not had enough sleep then I give myself grace and not push myself to get up that early. Sometimes its only 10 minutes that I end up having, or somedays it just doesn’t happen at all… and thats ok.

I always start with my God time. So I either do my daily Bible readings, or write in my prayer Journal, I pray for my kids, my husband and anything else that I need to first. I plan on showing you my prayer journals and Bible Study tools in a future blog so keep your eye out!! – But what I will say is that there are some awesome Bible Apps for your phone that I absolutely love! The main ones I am using at the moment are the “She reads Truth” app, the “First 5” app and the basic “Bible” app.

Then I grab my daily planner and check my to do list for the day. I add anything that needs to be added, make a plan for the day, scheduling when I will be doing the different things. I then pray over my planner. This may sound silly, but the days I forget to do this step, I always have jobs not completed or I will run out of time on certain things. But if I pray over my to do list and schedule, I ask God to highlight anything I need to focus on, or anything I may have forgotten about or anything that i need to take off my list. My day always run so much smoother and more productive when it has been covered in prayer.

Mission Mumma Plan Time

Lastly I have my ‘move’ time. Now this is probably the area in which I have the most flexibility at the moment. If all I can do is have a glass of water and take my multivitamins then thats fine. If I have an extra few minutes and the kids are all still asleep or entertained then I can do 10 minutes of Pilates or mummy exercises that I have found on Youtube. This is an area I look forward to growing in and changing over time. Somedays this step gets postponed until after the older two kids have gone off to school and I then go for a 30 minute walk with baby.

I just wanted to say quickly that on the days that my baby has a bad night and I have not had enough sleep, I don’t push myself and I give myself grace. Maybe that day I do these steps once the older girls have gone to school, or maybe its done gradually throughout the day. It does make the day a little more difficult for me (but lets face it, it was already going to be a difficult day when i’m living on 3-5 hours of sleep). So don’t push yourself too hard. Be realistic!!

How do you get started?
I would have to say baby steps…. If you haven’t done anything like this before, just try getting up 10 minutes earlier and do 3 minutes of each part. Read some verses, pray over your planner or to do list, and do 3 mins of squats or crunches or something… Then slowly grow it, slowly bring it earlier.

So there you have it, that is my current morning routine, and why I think it’s important… If you want more details contact me, I would love to explain more, or you can also check out the Hello Mornings podcast and website. I have also linked below some of the other pages to have a look at if you are interested in having a meaningful, purposeful morning routine.

Let me know if you have any other ideas for me or if you give this a try.
